Objective - The authors measure theory incidents occurring in four LIS journals between 1984-2003 in order to examine their number and quality and to analyze them by topic. A third objective, only identified later in the text of the study, was to compare theory development and use between Korean and international journals. Research questions asked include whether LIS has its own theoretical base as a discipline, and what characteristics the theoretical framework has.Design – Bibliometric study.Setting – Journal issues selected from four LIS journals for the time span from 1984 - 2003.Subjects – Two international journals, Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (JASIST) and Library and Information Science Research (LISR) were selected based on their high ranking in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) impact factors. Two Korean journals, Journal of the Korean Society for Information Management (JKSIM) and Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science (JKSLIS) were selected. Methods - After having determined a definition of theory, and identifying different levels of theory, the authors set up rules for the identification of theory incidents, which are defined as “events in which the author contributed to the development or the use of theory in his/her own paper” (550). Content analysis of 1661 research articles was performed to measure theory incidents according to working definitions. Interrater reliability was ensured by conducting independent coding for “subfield classification, identification of theory incidents, and quality measurement” (555),using a sample of 199 articles (random selection not specified), achieving 94-97% interrater reliability. Incidents, once identified, were evaluated for quality using Dubin’s “efficiency of law” criteria, involving measures of relatedness, directionality, co-variation, rate of change, and “profundity,” defined as the depth to which theory is incorporated into the research study.Main Results - 21.79% (n=362) of the articles contained theory incidents that were analyzed and evaluated. Trend measurement indicated an overall increase, although a slight decrease was shown in the year range 1993-2003. International journals accounted for 61.33% of theory incidents, compared to 38.67% for the Korean journals. T-testing showed that differences in means between Korean and international journals were not statistically significant. Topical theory areas were ranked by frequency. The top five areas were shown to be nearly identical between Korean and international journals. ANOVA was performed with significant results in the difference between efficiency ratings. Conclusion – The authors find that the overall proportion of theory incidents including both theory development and use increased through the 20-year time span examined, and that LIS has established its own theoretical framework based upon the frequency of incidents. |

INTRODUCTION: Publishing research results as journal articles is the most common format used by researchers for dissemination of advancements in science. To select where to publish, authors must know how to identify the most recognized journals in each field, adopting quality criteria. PURPOSE: To discuss journal selection criteria and bibliometric indicators for evaluation of scientific production and to analyze the status of indexing of Brazilian and international journals in health science databases, mainly for journals in surgery and gastroenterology fields. RESULTS: The totals of journals indexed in health science databases are presented, highlighting the relative participation of journals in surgery and gastroenterology in each database. CONCLUSION: The decision to publish in a national or international journal should be based on bibliometric indicators and status of indexing in databases, but the objectives of the research must be the main point considered by authors. |

The beginnings and the developments of the main Croatian chemical journals that are referred to in the number of international information sources are presented. These are the Croatica Chemica Acta, published by the Croatian Chemical Society and the Kemija u industriji (Chemistry and Industry) and Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Quartely, published by the Croatian Society of Chemical Engineers and Technologists. Also stressed is the important role that the first short-lived Croatian chemical journal Revue Chimique had in the development of Croatian chemical publishing. All editors of the three main Croatian chemical journals are listed and in the case of the Croatica Chemica Acta, all titles that this journal carried from its beginning in 1927. Additionally, the journals Priroda (Nature) and Prirodoslovlje (Natural Sciences) that publish articles from all fields ofnatural sciences including chemistry, are mentioned since they are important in the popularization of science in Croatia. Priroda is the oldest Croatian natural-science journal - the first issue appeared on July 3, 1911. Prirodoslovlje publishes articles about the development of Croatian science and Croatian scientific achievements through history. However, chemistry articles in both journals are relatively few. |

The bibliometric characteristics of electronic journals (e-journals) covering the field of information science have been studied. Twenty-eight e-journals were identified and ranked by number of articles on the subject they published. A Bradford plot revealed that the core is not well developed yet, but it will likely contain six journals. The publication of information science articles in e-journals began modestly in 1995 with 26 articles, but it has risen to approximately 250 articles per year. The most prolific authors are identified. The vast majority of them are located in the United States or United Kingdom. Only 26 articles have authors from more than one country, showing that electronic technology has not yet strongly influenced international collaboration. About 2/3 of the articles originate in academic institutions. Common topics of e-journal articles in information science include electronic information, electronic publishing, virtual (digital) libraries, information search and retrieval, and use of the Internet. Seven online databases cover these e-journals; Information Science Abstracts is the only one to cover all 28 journals, and it has the highest number of abstracts from them - over 1,100. |

This April 2008, volume 3, number 1 issue of Ambiente e Água – An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science is a landmark for Ambi-Água to achieving national and international recognition. This year it is expected that the primary system for scientific journal evaluation in Brazil, QUALIS CAPES (http://qualis.capes.gov.br/webqualis/) will review the quality and geographical impact of Ambi-Água inasmuch as many Lattes curricula of scientists involved in Brazilian post-graduate programs show publications in Ambi-Água in the last two years. Batista (2007a) discussed details of CAPES evaluation procedure. In addition to the quality appraisal, CAPES also indicates the regional impact of scientific journals as local, national or international. Once a journal is evaluated by CAPES and has three years of on-time publications, CNPq, the major scientific support agency in Brazil, accepts applications for funding that journal. This may significantly improve the operational facilities of a granted journal. Ambi-Água editorial board is proud to announce that since its first issue it has been circulating on-time. |

In recent years, as the development of science and technology rapidly accelerated, science- and technology-based industries have emerged. Representative examples are the Information and Telecommunications (IT) industry in the late 20th century and more recently the BioTechnology (BT) and NanoTechnology (NT) industries. However, despite the emergence of science- and technology- based industries, industrial policy-makers have suffered difficulties in grasping exactly what kinds of science and technology they should manage. Therefore, in this research, I propose a method of linking science and technology with industry, by adopting the media wherethrough they are delivered. As the media for conveying science and technology, I make use of the scientific articles administered by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) and the patents registered in the US Patent Office (USPTO). In this way, I identified 750 journals and 84 US patent classes corresponding to the IT industry, 1779 journals and 7 patent classes corresponding to the BT industry and 483 journals and 16 patent classes corresponding to the NT industry. This research is meaningful in that it emphasized the importance and convenience of scientific articles and patents in formulating today’s industrial policies and showed how to link science and technology with industry, by using the subject categories of the ISI and the patent classes of the USPTO. |

National and international indicators show that there is a big inadequacy in science andtechnology education in Turkey as compared to other countries. This important problemaffects the young students’ structure of thinking perspective and perceptions of nature in awrong way. The problems in science and technology education will block creative andcritical thinking, curiosity and positive attitudes towards nature. In order to determineattitudes towards science and technology education program and the reasons of lowachievement in science education, a questionnaire with 20 items about science andtechnology lesson, has been prepared and applied to 84 science and technology lessonteacher in elementary schools in two different cities (Adiyaman and Malatya) of Turkey.According to the result of this research, the main problems with science and technologyeducation are insufficient number of science and technology teachers’ taking active role inthe preparation of the programs, the insufficient in-service training of the science teacherin the transition state of a new program, the huge numbers of the students in the class, the informational education orienting students towards only exam achievement, thebroken link with other lessons (e.g. mathematics program) and insufficient physicalconditions of schools (less laboratory opportunities). |

[English]The Information Science reflections have been with almost focused on information access and dissemination aspects, no existing literature about ethical aspects of knowledge organization and representation (KOR). It leads to the need to check out theexistence of ethical values - and problems - which can cause impact on this field, since it is supposed that they are not assumed as that, although they are revealed in everyday’s practice. Therefore and trying to contribute to a further reflection on the lack ofliterature on ethics in KOR it aimed to analyse the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology - JASIST, Journal of Documentation, Knowledge Organization, Cataloging & Classification Quarterly, The Indexer and Ethics and Information Technology in the period between 1995 and 2004. The results reveal twocomplementary dimensions: one concerning diversity and the warrant of specification, which enables proof of the pertinence of the heoretical principles announced by Hudon (1997), Beghtol (2002, 2005) and García Gutiérrez (2002), relatively to a transcultural ethics of mediation that reflects a diversity (fitted with a precision that, many times, passes by the dimension of multilingualism), making use, for such, of tools that may provide cultural warrant to the knowledge representation. |

This paper aims to present the situation of Spanish Psychology journals with regard to certain qual-ity parameters obtained from two Spanish journal evaluation systems (RESH and DICE), Latindex and others.First of all, the publishing profile is analyzed in relation to the publication frequency compliance and other international standards for scientific publications. In addition, the level of international dis-semination of Spanish Psychology journals in international databases is also examined, as a reflection of its quality and the interest that such a journal provokes in the scientific community. The best ten Spanish journals are identified according to the parameters considered in DICE: compliance with the publication frequency established, variety of institutions that contribute articles to the journal (contribu-tion openness), variety of institutions represented at the editorial board (editorial board openness), if it has a peer review system, the number of Latindex criteria that the journal fulfils and its level of pres-ence in international databases. Finally, editors’ attitude towards online journals and Open Access as well as the internationality of editorial boards and authorship are analysed. Some results: a) most journals follow international publishing conventions and watch for the time-liness of publication; b) a third of the journals are well represented in international databases; c) taking into account six quality criteria, there are 25-30 high level or competitive journals; d) a cautious atti-tude towards OA is observed in Spanish Psychology journals; e) according to the “internationality” of Psychology as a scientific domain, journals must make an effort to include foreign members in their advisory or scientific boards in order to attract papers from other countries. Around 20 journals have good levels of foreign authors and advisors. |

In this paper, convergences of three- step mean value iterative scheme are established for a mapping of asymptotically quasi – nonexpansive type in a uniformly convex Banach space. The results obtained in this paper extend and improve the recent ones announced by D. R. Sahu and J. S. Jung [ Sahu and Jung, (2003) Fixed – point iteration processes for non- Lipschitzian mappings of asymptotically quasi- nonexpansive type, International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences 2003 : 2075 - 2081], and many others. |
